Satellite navigation
Satellite navigation is a vital facilitator of everyday activity for individuals, companies and public service bodies.
In use by the maritime and survey sectors for several years, satellite navigation (satnav) receivers are now a routine element in digital networks, mobile phones, cars, taxis, buses, trucks, and the aviation and leisure markets.
Software is a major component of all aspects of satnav systems. Integrating satnav into an operational application therefore requires the use of modern software engineering and risk management techniques.
Logica has one of Europe’s leading industrial groups specialising in satellite positioning.
Logica has a long track record in the development of mission control systems for the European Space Agency (ESA) and of successfully building on these for major commercial operators. We are a key supplier to the Galileo programme
Our industry-specialist groups work with our satnav experts to deliver solutions that meet business needs. We can draw on industry specialists in road, rail, air and marine transport, mobile telecoms, defence, emergency services, agriculture, the leisure sector, and many more.
EGNOS
To facilitate the use of GPS and Glonass for safety-of-life applications, ESA has deployed the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS). Under contract to prime-contractor Alcatel Space, Logica developed the unit that verifies the EGNOS message before and after transmission. The Logica integrity check set (LICS) is the most critical element of EGNOS since it ensures that the information being broadcast is absolutely reliable.
